Tok was an Alaska Road Commission camp that was setup for the construction of the Alcan and Glenn Highways during the 1940's. In 1946, the same year the Alaska Highway was opened to civilians, Tok was designated a Presidential Townsite. From 1954 - 1979 Tok was home to a pump station of the Haines-Fairbanks fuel pipeline.

One of the most notable features to Tok are the four 700 ft. towers that serve as long range communications towers for the U.S. Coast Guard. They communicate all the way to the Gulf of Alaska.

Up until 1971 Tok also served as U.S. Customs along the Alaska Highway.

Now days Tok is used as a place to refuel and rest before heading to Fairbanks or Anchorage when heading North, or to gas up when traveling south on the Alaska Highway. It is home to several R.V. Parks. During summer it is home to many wilderness fire fighting crew.

Tok also has a strong dog sledding history hosting one of the states oldest dog races. The Tok Race of Champions Sled Dog Race is held every March. With this history Tok host a few dog breeding and training facilities.
